Electronic engineering is used for the collection, processing and transmission of information.

The course involves theory, practice, and project work. The technical subjects are supported by a range of professional development modules which work on the individual’s ability to communicate, work in teams and understand business concepts. The programme is supported by well-equipped laboratories and workshops and department staff are drawn from a wide range of electronic engineering technologies.

Common electronic systems include applications like mobile phones, sound and vision systems, computer and information technology, automation and machine control, robotics and biomedical engineering. Electronic engineering is concerned with the design, development, manufacture and application of electronic devices, circuits and systems.

Core to this degree is the Industrial Placement, in which you will take up employment in an engineering company, within the UK or worldwide.

Electronic Engineering involves the understanding of both hardware and software and how they combine within high technology systems from the design of nanotech devices to the operation of a high-speed computer networks. Engineering Software involves the design and development of software systems and various forms of computer-based applications. Software Engineering is important due to the ever-increasing use of mobile technology, the increasing complexity of high technology solutions, and the emergence of new areas such as Internet of Things.

This course is designed to produce professional engineers who can design and optimise complex hardware, software and communications systems, and you will be at the forefront of developing the connected world.  You’ll develop the skills you need to work in all aspects of the ICT industry, including software design, information technology, telecommunications, and computer network engineering.

This programme is ideal if you want to build an Electronic Engineering career in Design, Manufacturing, Servicing, Marketing or Consultancy. As a graduate, you will have both practical and academic expertise in the area of electronic engineering, telecommunications and in computer and networking systems.

The programme includes practical and project-based learning in well-equipped modern laboratories. The department maintains close links with local industries and consequently many of our graduates are offered employment even before graduation.

The modern day ‘smart economy’ is powered by equally smart electronic circuits and systems. The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Electronic Engineering with Computer Systems is a four-year engineering programme that provides graduates with a range of practical skills and competences in the areas of hardware development and validation, product software development, embedded systems and digital communications – all highly relevant skill sets for the innovative Electronic Engineer.

The BEng Hons Electronic Engineering with Enterprise Development will prepare you to become a professional engineer, working on electronic products and systems, from research and design to installation and sales. Your job may be to take an idea from conception to final product.

You will be qualified to work in many areas, including power generation and control, transportation, IT, manufacturing, construction and telecommunications.

Most engineers work with large-scale systems, such as using electricity to transmit energy or controlling automation in the home. You will learn a wide range of technologies, from household appliances and installing lighting within buildings, to power stations and satellite communications.

On completion of this four-year apprenticeship, you will become a fully qualified electronic security systems installer, with a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate Craft – Electronic Security Systems.

You may then choose to work as electronic security systems installer in the security installation industry working on integrated security systems.

Many apprentices use their apprenticeship qualification as a platform to launch careers such as managers, owners of businesses and instructors amongst others.

Consumer electronics, mobile devices, vehicles, renewable energy systems, medical devices, wearable fitness technologies, as well as advanced robotics are now ubiquitous. As these technologies continue to evolve and grow, skilled electronic engineers continue to work at the forefront of this technological revolution.

Electronic engineers work on cutting-edge research and development (R&D), advanced semi-conductor fabrication, design, prototyping, software simulation, coding, new product and applications development. 

Communications technology is one of the most sophisticated and rapidly changing application areas of electronics. This course will prepare you for a challenging career in electronic and communications engineering in areas such as design support, development and production. It has a particular focus on communications engineering, particularly in the latter years. 

The postgraduate certificate involves the application of electronics technologies to artistic and design practice, from the point of view of creative, aesthetic, mood and thematic aspects of art and the problem-solution paradigm of design in an elegant sense.

The course will explore applications of electronics technologies in a basic, mixed media sense, within a thematic research context, underpinned by academic methodologies, leaning heavily into the learners’ existing creative practices, in terms of practical projects of their collective choice. Learners will ultimately gain practical and research knowledge, skills and competencies applicable within their own professional context.

This full-time course is designed to teach students the skills necessary to work in many growing areas within the Engineering/Technology sector, along with the installation of Intruder Alarm Systems and Closed-Circuit TV Surveillance systems.

The course also introduces students to software development and robotics through the use of Arduino microcontrollers as well as 3D modelling and 3D printing. Students will also learn how to design, build, and test various electronic circuits.

This dedicated Soccer programme enables students to develop and perfect their soccer performance skills whilst also gaining a full QQI qualification in Sport, Recreation and Exercise. FAI Coaching qualifications up to Youth cert are included in this award. This programme allows students to progress to Institutes of Technology nationwide.

The course is designed to introduce you to the challenges and opportunities of working in emergency frontline public services. Careers such as Paramedic, Emergency Medical Technician, Intermediate Care Operative, Emergency Call Operative and Fire Services will be introduced to you and help you prepare for further study in this area.

This course is designed for students who wish to work in either the emergency care or fire and ambulance services. This course leads to a Level 5 award in Health Service skills with additional certification in Emergency First Responder, accredited by The Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC). Learners will train for Emergency First Responder incorporating Cardiac First Responder certification which is also PHECC accredited.
