Throughout this course learners will enhance their English language abilities and develop IT competencies, including digital literacy, software applications, selling practices and online collaboration skills required to transition to their future career.

This course is intended for students whose first language is not English. Students will have the opportunity to attend 7 hours of intensive English language classes. It will provide the English language skills needed to make it possible to get a good job.

This course also combines a wide range of general studies modules and students will have the option to select from several options such as: Business Studies; Word Processing; Information Technology; Start Your Own Business; Music; Hairdressing; Exercise & Fitness.

The BA in English Language and Literature aims to foster critically aware and digitally-skilled graduates who are highly adept at creating and interpreting texts and content. The programme will enhance literary and professional knowledge of English by focusing on the core features of language and linguistics, as well as the core literary texts, genres and theories.

Graduates will have expertise spanning the language system (vocabulary, grammar, phonology and discourse), digital analysis and content creation tools, as well as a thorough understanding of English literature across a range of eras, literary and cultural theories and genres.

You will study texts ranging from the Old English, medieval and early modern periods to the nineteenth and through to the twenty-first century – writing which extends across national boundaries and regions, from British to Irish to American to World Literature, and covering multiple genres. You will explore literary production, value and impact – how fiction, poetry and drama are inspired, shaped, released and received in particular historical and cultural contexts. You will learn how the meanings of literary texts change and renew across time and space.

The study of Classical Languages is concerned with the language, literature and thought of either Ancient Greece or Ancient Rome. You will choose to study either Greek or Latin. History of Art and Architecture is about the study of images, objects and buildings. It is unique in developing high levels of visual literacy applicable to a range of career pathways. It explores why works of art look the way they do and seeks to discover what they say about the societies that created them. It develops skills in visual analysis, critical assessment, and communication.

What is Middle Eastern, Jewish and Islamic Civilisations

Middle Eastern, Jewish and Islamic Civilisations is the study of the historical origins as well as contemporary culture of a wide range of societies of the region, providing you with an insight into the contemporary Middle East and to the challenges of diversity and multiculturalism in an increasingly globalised world.

The study of English is concerned with the history and practices of writing in English and encompasses literary works spanning English, Anglo-Irish, American and post-colonial cultures. It aims to develop a thorough knowledge of the history of these literatures while also enabling students to develop a sophisticated critical consciousness and an awareness of critical and cultural theory.

If your interest in literature extends to an ambition to write creatively, this degree programme will support that ambition through classes, workshops, and seminars dedicated to the development of your creative talent. In the final year, you will work on – and complete to high standard – a substantial writing project. To help you reach this standard, you will be advised and directed by one of the supervisors on the Creative Writing or English team.

Built around a core of significant authors writing in English from Elizabethan times to the end of the Twentieth Century, from Shakespeare to Seamus Heaney, we provide the opportunity for you to follow your own interests through a wide range of optional modules. Two thirds of the course is made up these: you can, for example, take strands on creative and professional writing, women's writing and gender studies, and American literature; or select from modules on contemporary writing, modern drama, love poetry, film adaptation, or Beat culture, to name just a few.

In your final year, you will be guided by a member of the teaching team and write a dissertation on a topic of your own choice. 

For those interested in a career in teaching, the modules on Education will give you a taste of theory and practice employed in primary and secondary schools as well as colleges. You can also take courses on creative and professional writing to develop your skills as a communicator and raise your game for the jobs market. 

Study English, Drama and Film if you are interested in the relationships between literature, drama, film, and media cultures. Refine your critical engagement with a wide variety of texts and cultures, in different genres and media, and across different national and historical locations.

Consider the role of cultural representation across a diverse range of genres, forms and time periods in shaping community and societal structures and beliefs. Explore how the study of English, Drama and Film intersects with questions of gender, race, and identity. Become a critical and creative thinker.

Applicants must have completed BIM’s Basic Safety Training Course.
