Entry Routes

Qualifications required

Government and industry reports in recent years have identified widespread skills shortages in Transport and Logistics, in response to this, efforts have been undertaken to broaden the entry routes into the sector.

New Apprenticeships applicable to the logistics and supply chain occupations are: ­

    

 

Logistics Associate Apprenticeship (QQI Level 6)

The Logistics Associate Apprenticeship provides an example of the comprehensive skills development available to apprenticeships and the doors opened on their career path.

Apprentices are employed for a period of two years with academic study (1 day per week) forming part of this programme. Experience is gained by working on the job and Apprentices will be required to complete assignments and examinations for both their academic study and work based placements, ensuring that they receive the correct preparation for positioning themselves for their future careers.

How to become an Apprentice:
  • You must obtain employment as an apprentice in your chosen occupation.
  • The employer must be approved to train apprentices.
  • The employer must register you as an apprentice within two weeks of recruitment.  
Key Tasks / responsibilities will include:
  • Liaising with transportation companies to create a good working relationship.
  • Preparing invoice for orders and deliveries as part of record keeping measures and evidence of transactions.
  • Ensuring compliance with customs duties, controls, tariff, international conventions and agreements.
  • Keeping records of all shipping activities, documenting procedures, guidelines and changes in procedures for reference purposes.
  • Creating a safe working environment by adhering to safety measures to prevent accident and complications that may arise during work.
Opportunities on Qualification

On successful completion of the proposed apprenticeship, a person could expect to be eligible for a position as a Logistician; Freight Forwarder; Distribution Manager; Transport Manager; supervisor; Transport Planner/ Co-ordinator; Warehouse Manager; Supervisor; Inventory Manager; Process Engineer; Supply Chain Manager; Shipping Agent.

Transport and Commercial Driving Apprenticeship (QQI Level 6)

 

The Transport Operations & Commercial Driving Apprenticeship provides the academic qualification and practical training and work experience that supports a vibrant and exciting career in the freight distribution and logistics sector. Apprentices will also receive expert driving lessons and training in advance of completing their C / CE driving test and attaining the Driver CPC qualification.
