If you dream of becoming a professional sportsperson, Ireland has many role models that you can aspire to follow. Whether it’s athletics, boxing, gymnastics, swimming or rowing, Team Ireland's tally of Olympic medals is the most successful in the 100 years since it first took part. Rhasidat Adeleke, Kellie Harrington, Daniel Wiffen, Rhys McClenaghan, Fintan McCarthy and Paul O’Donovan are just some among the many athletes who have inspired the next generation to pursue their sporting dreams.

Developments in infrastructure, coaching and facilities will build on these achievements and open opportunities on the world stage. Funding of €500 million government investment in sport before the next Olympic Games in 2028 has been announced and will include a new velodrome and badminton centre.

Aside from our Olympians, Ireland also has many other well-known professional sportspeople in soccer, rugby, golf and horseracing to name but a few sports. Roy Keane, Robbie Keane, Brian O’Driscoll, Johnny Sexton and Ruby Walsh are all household names. Golf boasts many Irish superstars such as Pádraig Harrington, Rory McIlroy and Leona Maguire.

The route to professional sport will vary from one organisation to another. Most people will start out in their chosen sport playing for a club or academy where they will receive training and coaching. Those with exceptional skills and talents are spotted early on by talent scouts. Check out different routes to become a sports professional and facilities available for high performance athletes at Sport Ireland Campus. Many sports professionals study for a qualification whilst competing, as a career in this sector may only last until you are in your mid-thirties. If you are exceptional in any sporting activity you may be eligible for a sports scholarship to financially support you through college.

International sporting events such as the Ryder Cup draw thousands of tourists and bring huge economic benefits. Ireland’s first ever major international sports events policy highlights the significance of sports tourism and the opportunity to position Ireland as a top location for these events.

Even if you do not have the skills to become a professional athlete there are a plethora of careers in the sector. Behind all sportspeople and international events is a whole team of management and administration professionals. The role will vary and can include managing individual athletes or a team, contracts, complying with policies & regulations, scheduling, marketing & managing events.
