Statistics

In our digital world, the amount of data has increased exponentially, opening up new areas for analysis, and an increasing demand for statisticians. As a Statistician you would be responsible for collecting, analysing and interpreting data using specialised computer software, mathematical and statistical methods.

Statistics are used to understand what the data means, answer questions, make predictions and determine the probability of an event happening. This information is crucial to the public sector, business, medicine, social sciences and a wide range of industries. Using data makes for more informed decisions and drives actions. Examples include creating government policies, tracking sales trends, optimising operational efficiency or monitoring population changes to decide what local services are required.

You may be surprised about the wide range of interesting careers available.  Statistical techniques can be applied to solve complex problems and help to overcome many of the world’s challenges. Statistics is fundamental in areas such as  biological research, sports performance, global elections, forensic science and calculating insurance losses as a result of natural disasters. Statistics graduates are working in fascinating careers throughout the globe.  For instance, agriculture, IT, economics, education, engineering, research, business operations, finance and investment banking, meteorology, actuarial services, transport and the space industry to name but a few.

As a statistician you will need good mathematical, computing, analytical and critical thinking skills. Effective presentation and communication skills are also important to present your findings and explain complex statistical concepts to non-technical audiences, your employer or clients. If you are curious and want to understand more about the world, you will find statistics intellectually challenging and have the opportunity to work in many different unrelated sectors.
