Environmental Science

Environmental Science is the study of the world around us and how living organisms, including humans, relate to their environments and to each other. It pays particular attention to the impact of humans on the environment, providing society with tools to understand our relationship with the natural world and how we can solve the many issues facing the environment.

As Earth’s human population continues to grow, as technology advances and human needs and wants increase, our impacts on the world become more widespread and severe. Environmental impacts, in turn, affect human health and well-being. This has brought great strain to the natural world, endangering animal species, destroying habitats and warming the globe.

Environmental Scientists are at the forefront of addressing this crisis. Whether by helping us understand how the atmosphere is changed by greenhouse gasses or ecologists studying how animals and humans relate to their surrounding environment when it changes.

A few of the major challenges environmental scienctists face include; global climate change, management of earth's water resources, energy and mineral resource depletion, air pollution and acid deposition, water pollution, the fate of hazardous chemicals in the environment to name but a few.

Environmental Science is a strongly multidisciplinary area. Those working in it will generally have developed knowledge and experience of many areas of science, including the physical and life sciences, so they can develop a complete understanding of the environment.
