Interest rates, investments, construction costs, supply & planning delays, availability of stock and employment trends such as hybrid working, all have knock-on effects on the property market. The value of the world’s property is nearly four times global GDP, with over three quarters in residential property.

If you are interested in Auctioneering, Estate Agency, Property Management and Property Letting, the sector is constantly evolving and offers a myriad of career possibilities. You may choose to work in the residential, retail, industrial or commercial sector of the industry, or a combination of all.

Dealing with diverse properties, you will meet people from all walks of life, making for an interesting and dynamic working environment.

Whether buying, selling, letting or managing a property you will require excellent organisational, marketing, communication and negotiation skills amongst others.

Roles include Property Surveyor, Property Auctioneer, Estate Agent and Property Manager to name but a few. Exciting new fields in the sector include PropTech, Corporate Real Estate and Sustainability.

 

Career Paths

Usually a third level qualification in auctioneering, property economics, real estate or property management is required. As well as full time courses in Property Valuation & Management, there are opportunities to upskill through part-time study and on-line distance learning . A number of colleges offer one year QQI Level 5 courses in Auctioneering and related fields, many of which link to higher education. Check with educational institutions for further information. If you prefer to earn and learn, a two year apprenticeship in auctioneering & property services, which is open to all, is a good option.

Information on accreditation to practise in this sector is available from the statutory registration body, the Property Service Regulatory Authority, and professional associations such as the Institute of Professional Auctioneers & Valuers and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors.
