Surveyors work in many different industries which offer a rich choice of career paths. As well as the construction and property sector there are opportunities in mining, geomatics and hydrographics. With nineteen different pathways you can specialise in, the career is exceptionally varied. There is a skills deficit so career prospects are excellent. A career in surveying gives you the opportunity to work in diverse working environments across the world.
Whether you choose to work in construction, property or land surveying you will need to be detail orientated and have excellent communication and problem solving skills. Dealing with all stages of a project, you will liaise with other professionals, such as engineers, architects and project managers if working in the construction sector. Construction projects, where surveyors' skills are highly sought after, include energy & utilities, air and seaports, roads & railways, data centres and pharmaceutical plants. The use of big data, drones and technology, such as AR & VR, make for an interesting and dynamic working environment whether on land, at sea or in the air.
Roles include Property Surveyor, Quantity Surveyor, Building Surveyor, Surveyor Project Manager, Surveyor Planning and Development and Surveyor Insurance.
Career Paths
As well as full time courses in Surveying there are opportunities for industry professionals to switch career paths or upskill through online and part-time courses or an Advanced Quantity Surveyor Apprenticeship. A number of colleges offer one year QQI Level 5 courses in Quantity Surveying and related fields, many of which link to higher education. Check with educational institutions for further information.
The Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland is the professional body for property, land and construction professionals. A third level qualification in accredited surveying related courses and completion of the Assessment of Professional Competence will enable you to qualify as a Chartered Surveyor, which can enhance your career prospects.
