One of the main opportunities for school leavers is the ESB Apprenticeship Programme. This programme offers you on the job learning as well as classroom based learning.
ESB apprentices will learn a variety of electrical and practical skills and benefit from varied work experience, working both indoors and outdoors.
Applications
Applications for the ESB Apprenticeship Programme open in February/March. Candidates that meet set eligibility must criteria complete aptitude tests. Shortlisted candidates are called to interview in June/July with successful candidates starting in September each year.
Remember students both female and male are interested in working with their hands and working outdoors. An apprenticeship gives you transferrable skills and allows you to work anywhere in the world.

ESB Engineering/Craft Apprenticeship Programmes
ESB recruits apprentices during different times of the year to start their electrical and mechanical engineering career with us. It is a four-year programme leading to QQI advanced level 6 Electrical trade certificate.
By completing this apprenticeship, you will also attain a BTEC (Level 3) Diploma in Mechanical or Electrical and Electronic Engineering as well as a Level 3 Extended Diploma. The Benefits of ESB’s Apprentice Programme:

ESB Business Apprenticeship Programmes
- IT Apprenticeship A two-year programme, in conjunction with FIT, during which you gain valuable experience in Software Development, Network Engineering or Cyber Security while studying part-time for an Advanced Certificate in IT (NFQ Level 6).
- Accounting Technician Apprenticeship Run by Accounting Technician’s Ireland in partnership with SOLAS, It is a two-year programme where apprentices gain practical accounting experience in a business and attend college to gain a Level 6 QQI Advanced Certificate in Accounting. Apprentices work four days and attend college one day per week.
- Recruitment Apprenticeship Run by the National Recruitment Federation in conjunction with the National College of Ireland and SOLAS, it is a three-year programme where apprentices gain practical experience in recruitment and attend college to gain a Level 8 BA Hons Degree in Recruitment Practice. Apprentices work four days on site and attend college one day per week

Traineeship Programme for People with Disabilities
ESB run an annual Traineeship Programme for People with Disabilities annually (subject to business needs). Approved positions are advertised online with the Association for Higher Education, Access & Disability in April/May. Applications are by CV through these organisations. Shortlisted applicants are called to interview in July/August, with successful candidates commencing in September. Placements are for nine months.
