Work Experience Programme

This programme has been designed to help support you in providing quality Work Experience placements to students from local schools and colleges to help with recruitment of staff. The Tourism and Hospitality sector has provided work experience opportunities for students for many years, equipping many young people with a practical introduction to the workplace. A holistic placement can build an affinity with the industry among young people and provide a local talent source for recruitment.

The TourismCareers.ie Work Experience Programme is aimed at school students aged 14 - 18. It is a structured, in-depth programme that will help the student develop the necessary skills required for working in the sector.

Programme Overview

To facilitate a quality work experience, we have created a recommended programme that is designed to run over 5/10 days. The student will be encouraged to complete activities across several different areas in the workplace and operate alongside experienced staff members where possible. This gives them a realistic insight into the world of work, an opportunity to be part of a team, to develop work-related skills, gain confidence, and learn from their experience.

Alongside this, this programme is a chance for them to learn more about themselves and develop the necessary employability skills to prepare them for the future, whether it be seasonal or part-time work, or a career in your business.

Business Agreement

By posting my work placement opportunity details on tourismcareers.ie and participating in the Tourism Careers Work Placement Programme, my business agrees to:

  1. Assign a placement sponsor to mentor the student and ensure that the student has a clear point of contact.
  2. Provide a formal induction into the business with a focus on the student’s role.
  3. Identify the key skills the student will develop on their placement and provide a rounded experience which gives the student exposure to the different parts of the business that will help to develop these skills.
  4. Support and guide the student through their Work Experience Diary and Workbook and with a focus on the skills they are developing.
  5. Hold an exit meeting with the student to reflect on the skills learned and those that can be developed.

Note: Fáilte Ireland will be surveying schools and TY Co-Ordinators as well as participating businesses annually to ensure the placement programme is beneficial for all.

Important: You will need to provide a brief Business Profile, a description of the nature of work that will be experienced, and some details about when your business is available to hosting students on placement   Watch video tutorial here.
