Kylemore Abbey & Victorian Walled Garden is one of Ireland’s most popular Visitor Attractions. Located in Connemara, Kylemore Abbey provides a complete visitor experience, showcasing the best of the West of Ireland while encompassing beauty, spirituality, and history. 

Kylemore Abbey employs almost one hundred people across a range of departments including visitor centre, restaurant, kitchen, garden, maintenance, craft shop, administration, and marketing.

Employees enjoy working in a fast-paced environment with opportunities for ongoing training and career progression. Skills developed will create employment opportunities across the tourism and hospitality industry.

Placement Details

Kylemore Abbey is delighted to offer a tailored work placement option. Students can choose from a number of departments in the areas that interest them. One day will be spend in each department and students will have the opportunity to shadow an employee in these departments and also learn new skills by actively working in the departments.

A TY mentor will be on hand to meet the students and give them an introductory tour. Following completion of the work placement students will receive a certificate of completion.

Work placement options are available in the following departments:

Visitor Centre - The visitor centre is the first point of contact for visitors to Kylemore. Online bookings, ticket sales, and tour company bookings are handled by the VC.

Restaurant - The Kylemore Kitchen serves delicious home made food using locally sourced ingredients. Students will get an introduction to the hospitality side of the business and will have the opportunity to experience "a day in the life" of a Restaurant Assistant.

Craft and Design Shop - The Craft and Design shop at Kylemore showcases both Kylemore Abbey products and Irish Designers. Students will learn about the products made in Kylemore, merchandising, and customer service.

Chocolate Kitchen - Spend a day learning how chocolate is made and packaged with our Chocolatier.

Garden - Experience a "Day in the Life" of a gardener in the Victorian Walled Garden and get the opportunity to learn about the many plants and vegetables growing in it.

Abbey - Once the home of Mitchell Henry and his wife, this amazing castle will intrigue students who spend a day with the guides and learn all about the history of the magnificent castle and the Kylemore estate.

Pottery - The Kylemore Pottery studio produces beautiful pottery. Learn more about this specialist craft from our onsite potter.

Marketing - The marketing office at Kylemore is a hub of activity. Students will learn about the use of social media, creating content, advertising campaigns, organising events and lots more.
